Managing employee productivity and performance

It is important to note that the terms employee productivity and performance are two different terms. They are often interchanged and merged as one.

Employee performance refers to the process of completing a job to get a successful result, whereas productivity refers to the amount of work and efficiency done by an employee during a certain period. Productivity focuses on the output while performance looks at the process used to achieve the tasks.

Employee performance

An employee with barely any knowledge of the products their organisation sells, won’t be able to perform and deliver what is required of them.

It's possible to think of performance management as a two-way street. From a business standpoint, performance management is critical to achieving corporate goals, while from an employee standpoint, performance management helps managers to recognize and reward individuals who perform well.

Meeting the requirements of both people and tasks is a key component of good employee performance management. Task requirements are those that deal with strategy, both theoretical and practical. People requirements are related to your team's development, growth, and motivation.

Here are a few ways an employee’s performance can be managed.

  • Good Communication – here you communicate with employees

    • to know their level of satisfaction and engagement

    • to know their knowledge of the company’s objectives and the company’s expectations from them.

    • to know their extensive knowledge of the company’s products

  • Evaluate the company’s work culture.

  • Set up a Rewards & Recognition system - employees are more likely to perform well when there are incentives available after a performance well delivered and the more encouraged employees are, the higher their performance and company performance overall.

  • Training and Development - give employees opportunities to learn new skills. One strategy to manage performance in the age of up-skilling is to provide chances and outlets for employees to learn a new skill that will help them to be more efficient in their tasks.

Employee productivity

Andy Core stated, “Productivity in the workplace is an important aspect of every company and when top management understands this concept, success is just around the corner.”

One of the advantages of high staff productivity is that it guarantees that the organization remains relevant in the marketplace. Employee productivity can make or break a company's success; therefore, businesses are continuously seeking for methods to improve it.

Here are a few ways an employee productivity can be managed.

  • Respecting employees as individuals, in addition to the job they do. When employee feels respected, they're more likely "to go the extra mile" to help a company succeed.

  • Once you assign a task, leave the room. The employees will feel more relaxed, and more confident in their skills if there isn’t a supervisor micromanaging them.

  • Empower Employees - it is important for organization to give their employees a bit if freedom and a sense of achievements by granting them authority or freedom to take certain decisions, listening to their contributions and implementing the appropriate contributions.

  • Improve workplace conditions.

  • Allow flexible schedules when necessary.

  • Set clear expectations and deadlines that needs to be met.

  • Encourage self-care and time off.

  • Teaching employees time management skills.

Managing employee productivity and performance offers several advantages, and it is recommended that businesses implement a system to manage and enhance staff productivity and performance.

The strategies used in the improvement of employee performance and productivity are similar. This is because the end result for both is the same, ie revenue growth and development. It is advisable for companies to manage employee’s performance and productivity so that it does not affect the company’s bottom line.

In summary, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to managing employee productivity and performance; instead, it boils down to what strategy the firm will use to manage and enhance its employees' productivity and performance after they've investigated every possible issue.
